How Many Solar Sun Rings Do I Need for My Swimming Pool?

Recommended Pool Coverage for Solar Sun Rings

Solar Sun Rings are one of the simplest and most effective ways to warm your pool naturally while reducing evaporation and conserving energy. But to get the best results, it’s important to know how much of your pool should be covered.

Here’s what we recommend for optimal performance:

✅ Recommended Coverage: 50% – 70%

For most pools, 50% to 70% coverage provides the ideal balance of solar heating, water conservation, and comfort. Each Solar Sun Ring generates up to 21,000 BTUs of heat transfer per day in direct sunlight—so even partial coverage makes a big impact.

☀️ Hot Climates (High to Extreme Summer Heat):

Recommended Coverage: 50% – 60%

In regions that experience long, hot summers—like Arizona, Southern California, or West Texas—less coverage goes a long way. Excessive coverage in extreme heat can actually overheat your pool, especially during prolonged heat waves. Sticking to 50% to 60% allows your water to stay comfortable without trapping too much heat.

🌤️ Moderate Climates (Warm but Milder Summers):

Recommended Coverage: 70% or More

If you live in a coastal or temperate area where summers are warm but not scorching, we recommend bumping up your Solar Sun Ring coverage to 70% or more. This helps you get the most heat absorption possible on mild days while minimizing nighttime heat loss and evaporation.

⚠️ Avoid Overcoverage (90%+)

It might seem like more coverage equals better results—but that’s not always the case. We strongly discourage covering more than 90% of your pool’s surface.

Too much coverage can:

  • Create a greenhouse effect, warming the water beyond comfortable swimming levels.

  • Create stagnant conditions where algae can thrive.

  • Make pool chemistry harder to manage.

Balance is key to keeping your pool warm, clean, and comfortable all season long.
